Foreword

This research effort on the Freeman Family origins began in 1977 as a result of a visit I made to my Freeman Grandparents in Tampa, Florida in the summer of 1940. My Grandmother Freeman showed me the family bible with entries dating back to 1746.

In February 1989 I wrote and published: "Freeman Family Genealogy 1560 to 1988, Brewster Mayflower Line", 252 pages.

Having completed more research I wrote and published in November 1989 "Freeman Family Genealogy 1530 to 1989, Addendum Four", 104 pages.

Since that date two more visits to Plymouth, Massachusetts, and a two day visit to Pulborough, Sussex, England (during a tour of 30 days of Europe); correspondence with two other researchers: Wayne John Freeman of Henderson, Nevada, and Glenna F McLaughlin of Hollywood, Florida have occasioned a rewriting of these prior two published volumes.

In this current publication the research further confirms the Freeman Family origins from approximately 1530 to the present date. I am also including data from 1442 to 1530 which, although questionable at this time, may be of significant value in the future researching of this period.

What knowledge has this research led to?

  1. The Freeman Family is of ancient origin.
  2. It is a Mayflower Family.
  3. Unlike many other Mayflower Families, it does have an authentic Coat of Arms.
  4. The author is, as a result, a member of the Colorado Society of Mayflower Descendants, General Number 53625, Colorado Number 566, (1988); Historian of the Colorado Society (1988-1990); Governor of the Colorado Society (1990-1992); Assistant Governor of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (1990-1996); member of the Society of Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge, Number 770, (1989).

What is the setting for the Freeman Family and Pilgrim origins? The maps which follow show, first of all, "The Origins of the Pilgrims"; and secondly, the Freeman Family locations.

1442-1530

As noted in "Boston Transcript, 18 August 1913" item 3283, Title: Prence Freeman, the contention is made that Edmund Freeman of "Pulbury, County Sussex" was the son of Edmond of Honington, County Northampton, who was the great-grandson of John Freeman of Bentley, Northampton "20th (year of) Henry VI". In the following analysis, dated January 24, 1994, titled: An Analysis of the Freeman Family Lineage from Edmund Freeman of Pulborough/Sussex, England, etc." I question, without further research and proof, that this is the precise relationship. Future research will hold the answer to this contention.
